A garden snail seen from the side, with a fairytale castle built into the spiral of its shell: plum-coloured stone blocks picked out with pale mortar lines, a deep rose roof with a scalloped edge, a pennant flying from the spire and a heraldic banner hanging from the wall, arched windows lit warm gold from inside, a small red door at the foot of the shell, and moss-green ivy climbing over the stonework. The snail itself is a warm golden orange with a dark brown underside and two long eye stalks. There is no text anywhere in the design. The background is not stitched, so the fabric shows through and the whole piece reads like a little illuminated-manuscript creature - somewhere between a medieval marginalia drawing and a storybook cottage.

CHOOSING YOUR FABRIC The background is not stitched, so the fabric colour is part of the finished piece. Every photo here is worked on black, and black is what this palette is built for: the golden-orange snail (DMC 3820 Straw Dark and 720 Orange Spice Dark) and the deep rose roof (326) both lift right off a dark ground, and the plum stonework (3740 Antique Violet Dark) still separates cleanly from it.
